The world of client services is a fascinating one, packed with unique challenges and rewarding triumphs. In my 3 years as a Client Service Specialist at Drawbridge, I’ve seen my fair share of both. One hurdle, common in our communications business is clients often prefer to go straight to the top, seeking direct interaction with our CEO/Leading Consultant.
It’s a familiar scenario: you’ve built rapport, understood their needs, and are ready to guide them through the process, only to hear, “Can I just speak with Hassan Abdul?” In a relationship driven industry like communications, where trust and direct lines of contact are highly valued, this preference is understandable. Clients often associate the CEO with ultimate authority, decision-making power, and a deeper understanding of the client’s vision.
The Disadvantage: When Connections Get Tangled
This tendency can, at times, feel like navigating a delicate dance. My role is to be the primary point of contact, anticipate needs, resolve issues and ensure a seamless communication experience. When clients bypass me, it can occasionally feel like a missed opportunity to fully demonstrate the value I bring. It can also lead to fragmented communication or a slight delay if I need to relay information back and forth.
For a client service specialist, whose core function is to be the face and voice of the organization, it can sometimes be a challenge to establish that essential intermediary role when the client’s gaze is fixed on the top.
The Advantage: The Power of a Unified Front
Here’s where the “spin” comes in, and why I still absolutely love what I do. This client preference, surprisingly, often turns into a significant advantage for Drawbridge and, by extension, our clients.
It speaks volumes about the strong leadership and trust our CEO and senior team have cultivated. Clients feel confident they’re dealing with an organization led by competent and accessible individuals. Sometimes, this preference is also rooted in a pre-existing relationship they’ve built with our leadership over the years, or simply the natural desire to interface directly with an individual on the same level as their own top management. This foundational trust, whether new or established, trickles through every interaction, making my job of reinforcing that trust much easier.
Strategic Delegation in Action
It allows for strategic delegation and specialized focus. While clients might initially seek out the CEO, I often become the expert who translates their high-level needs into actionable plans. My boss can focus on strategic partnerships and growth, while I delve into the nitty-gritty of project execution, ensuring every detail aligns with their vision. It’s a powerful tag-team approach where everyone plays to their strengths.
Our Collaborative Spirit
Most importantly, it highlights the collaborative spirit at Drawbridge. We operate as a unified front. When a client wants to speak with the CEO, it’s not a dismissal of my role, it’s often an opportunity for me to demonstrate how seamlessly we work together. I can quickly bring my boss up to speed, providing context and insights that allow for a highly productive conversation. It often results in a more comprehensive and satisfying experience for the client, as they get both the strategic oversight from leadership and the dedicated, detailed attention from me.
The Heart of Communications beyond the Bypassed Call
In the communications business, clarity, consistency, and connection are paramount. While a client’s initial preference might be for direct interaction with the lead consultant, my role ensures that once those high-level discussions happen, the execution is flawless and the ongoing communication is smooth.
The Real Reward Client Satisfaction
Let me tell you, there’s truly nothing more satisfying than receiving that email or phone call from a client, expressing their delight with our services. Hearing how our strategies helped them achieve their goals, seeing their brand flourish and knowing that I played a crucial part in that journey, that’s the true reward. The genuine satisfaction in their voice, the “thank you” that comes from a successful project, makes every interaction, every challenge absolutely worth it. It’s a pleasure and a privilege to be a part of their success story, every single time.
