Why Authentic Communication Matters in Today’s Media Landscape
“The best PR doesn’t feel like PR.” – Jessica Kleiman
In a world flooded with content, press releases, product launches and official statements, the
audience today has become incredibly sharp. They scroll fast, detect spin from a mile away and
crave connection over promotion.
Jessica Kleiman’s words hit home for communicators like us: the most effective PR doesn’t
announce itself. It quietly earns trust, fosters relatability, and becomes part of the conversation
without needing a spotlight.
Last year, I worked on one of our client’s projects at Drawbridge CM, a PR rollout for Shafa
Lubricant’s new product line. I was still relatively new, still figuring out what tone works for
press releases, how to pitch to journalists and how to deploy PR tactics.
On the surface, it was a regular launch: banners, media invites, coverage and content but what
stuck with me wasn’t these things, it was something the MD of Shafa said in his speech during
the press conference:
“As Nigeria continues to evolve economically, we recognize the importance of offering
solutions that help our customers better optimize their spending. With Shafa Shanu and Shafa
Doki, motorists and operators can expect reduced maintenance costs, allowing them to focus
their resources on what truly matters in their businesses and lives.”
That one paragraph reshaped how I thought about PR. It made me realize that it is not about
amplifying what a brand wants to say, but about finding the quiet truths that people already
care about and giving them a voice.
Why It Matters More Than Ever
- Consumer Trust is Everything
People align with brands that feel human; not perfect, not robotic, but transparent and
relatable. When communication reflects a brand’s true character, it becomes easier to
build the one thing every brand desire: loyalty. - Engagement Beats Intrusion
Nobody likes being sold to, but everyone loves a good story. PR efforts that feel natural,
that inform or inspire, have a far better chance at sparking genuine interest than overly
polished, self-promotional content. - Relatability Drives Connection
Great PR connects on a human level. As the Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe once said,
“Proverbs are the palm oil with which words are eaten.” In our context, we can say
stories are the seasoning that makes messages memorable.
How to Craft PR That Doesn’t Feel Like PR
Strategic authenticity is key. Here are a few timeless approaches we embed into our
communication style:
- Lead with Human Stories
Focus less on announcements and more on people; the communities impacted, the challenges
solved, the everyday heroes. These stories linger long after the headlines fade. - Speak Their Language
Drop the corporate jargon. Embrace warmth, clarity, and conversational tones. Your message
shouldn’t need a translator; it should feel like a trusted friend talking to you. - Tell, Don’t Sell
Every brand has a narrative. Instead of selling a product or taking the initiative, take your
audience on a journey; show how you got here, who’s walking with you, and why it all matters. - Listen First, Then Respond
Effective communication is a two-way street. Be present in conversations. Monitor sentiment,
answer questions and let your audience know they’re not just being spoken to; they’re being
heard.
Final Thoughts
Today’s PR must be rooted in truth, empathy, and storytelling. As professionals navigating this
ever-evolving media landscape, our job is not to make noise but to create meaning.
And if we do it well, our audience won’t even notice it’s PR; they’ll just call it a message that
made them feel something.
Let’s keep the stories real, the voices human, and the purpose clear.
